Drying her hands, Moxie’s mother placed the dish towel neatly on the metal bar, right below the sink. Turning she walked over to where Jill was waiting and gently pulled out the kitchen table chair. Sitting gingerly in it, Moxie’s Mother calmy folded her hands on her lap, “Alright then, you have my undivided attention. Please continue.”
Clearly her throat, Jill said, “Before we begin, how would be the best way to addresses you? Calling you Moxie’s Mother gets kind of clumsy and awkward after a while.”
“You may call me Mother,” Moxie’s Mother replied.
“Oh, okay,” Jill replied. “Mother it is.”
“Well. Mother, as I said before, the information I have to share with you is pretty unbelievable, but I swear to you that it is the truth…”
“Yes dear, you already said that. Now if you have anything important to tell me, please do so. Otherwise, I still have dishes to do.”
“You and your dishes,” Jill sighed. “My mother was exactly the same way. Always playing the perfect little housewife- even when my father had abandoned us.”
“Pardon?”
“No, nothing,” Jill replied. “What I wanted to tell you, is that I’m not from this world.
“Oh,” Mother replied with a patient smile, “Then do please tell me what world did you come from?”
Speaking slowly at first, Jill quickly picked up speed and related to Mother the events that brought her to the digital world. When she had finished, Jill asked, “Well what do you think?”
“Well, deary, I really don’t know what to think about all of this. It really is out of my realm of expertise. Have you considered talking to Moxie about this, she is afterall the expert on such things? However, right now I believe she is sleeping. You are welcome to spend the night and then tomorrow morning you can ask her your question.”
Yes, thank you.” Jill replied. “Where exactly is the guest room?”
“Upstairs, second door on the right. Now if you don’t mind, I have dishes to finish.”
“Of course, Mother and thank you.” Jill replied, standing up and stretching. “I believe that I’m going to turn in, you have a nice night.”
“You too deary, now a world of caution, once you go into the bedroom, stay there for the rest of the night.”
“And if I don’t,” Jill asked.
“Then there is no way, moxie or I can guarantee your safety. You understand of course?”
“Of course,” Jill replied. “Second door on the right, right”
“Yes, that is correct,” Mother replied over her shoulder as she walked back to the sink and picked up an overly clean dish. “Oh, and Jill remember my warning, stay in your room. We don’t want anything to happen to you.”
