A short time later I found myself sitting in a comfortable subway car seat, waiting for the train to take off. Now I know what you’re thinking. Train cars aren’t really that comfortable, but compared to the hard steel bed of the train car, this felt like luxury. Time seemed to pass by quickly. Soon, I found myself being ushered off of the train and though the buy terminal. Near the far right of the terminal, the Hobo stopped me short. “Wait here, and only come when I call you.”

Before I could ask why, he was gone. Looking around me, I took in the sights of the terminal. To be honest there wasn’t much to see. But to a country cat, such as myself, this was a lot to take in. In the center of the terminal, there were the vendors that occupied the outer four walls. One particular stall caught my attention, though to be more precise the smell of deep-fried mice, is what caught my noses attention. My stomach growled. Digging through my pockets, I found that I only had a few rubles, that the Hobo had gifted me, before we had left the station.  Sizing up the vendor, I saw that I had just enough to afford a quarter of a mouse plate. Standing in line, I waited till it was my turn, then handed the cashier my coins. When her back was turned, I grabbed the closest dish and ran before I was noticed. I heard a little up cry as I hurried away. But I didn’t dare turn around.

Ducking behind one of the numerous pillars that decorated the terminal, I began stuffing the food into my mouth as fast as I could, grimacing as the hot meat singed my lips.

“You know,” a voice hissed in my ear. “It’s not nice stealing someone else’s food. Especially when it’s the hand that could very well end up feeding you.”

Find the middle

Middle of what

Middle of everything- this is where perfection lies

Do you mean lays or not tells the truth

Either or

Huh, how does that make sense

Sense, who said anything about making sense

But everything must have a rational side

Perhaps a side, but not the middle

Because that is where perfection rests

I assume then, chaos is on the other side?

Perhaps, but then it could always be a pepperoni pizza

So, you don’t know?

Of course I don’t know, the answer is never the same

Perhaps, if we research the past and present…

Ha, good luck. The present is clueless and the past is making the best assumption that they could. Never truly knowing the answer. But if you’d like, we can go down this rabbit hole together.

What choice do we have. If we don’t learn from history, we are bound to repeat it.

Precisely.

Within a short period of time, I found myself standing watch, as the Hobo acquired our new clothes. At first, I had objected to obtaining new clothing in such a fashion, but it was quickly pointed out to me that we didn’t really have any choice in the manner, given both of our financial difficulties. So here I stood as look out, since I still at that point hadn’t acquired the art of sticky fingers. Feeling the guilt of what we were doing, I said a quick prayer to the saint of thieves.

Oh, Saint Nicholas, I come before you with heavy heart. I find myself in an impossible position. My new found friend and I are taking what we need through unlawful means. Though I know it’s wrong and I wish there was another way. I fear we have no other way…” I didn’t get any further, for at the moment, the hobo came around the corner with a shopping bag over his paw.

“Come on, let’s find someplace to get changed.”

A short time later, I walked out of a public bathroom, donning a suit and tie with a handkerchief tucked in my left breast pocket.

“So where do we go from here”

“Where going to take the subway to Moscow, where we’ll meet up with my colleagues.”

“Are we going to jump this one too?”

“Of course not,” the Hobo laughed. “We need to act like civilized cats, afterall. We’ll pay this time.”

“With what?”

“With rubles of course,” The Hobo whispered, as he graciously skimmed passed a pedestrian, who was coming the opposite way.  Courtesy of the gentleman that just passed us.”

Now, I know that they say cats always land on their feet, well I’m here to tell you that to my shame that I ended up curling into a ball and bouncing a few feet away from the tracks. The landing was rough, as you can imagine, and when I came to a stop, it took me sometime to gather  my wits about me. When I did so, the Hobo was standing over me, looking down. “Well, are you going to lay there all day, my bouncing friend or are you going to get up and come with me into the city. I promise that it will be worth your while”

Not seeing any other viable options, I rose to my feet. Rubbing my sore neck, I replied, “Fine, lead the way.”

Smiling, the Hobo turned and started walking towards town. Realizing that I wasn’t directly behind him, he turned to me, “What is the problem now?”

Not sure what he was talking about- but deciding to make something up so he wouldn’t ask again.  I grumbled something about my neck, while scrabbling to catch up.

After we had been walking for about forty minutes, the entrance of the town came into sight.

“Now before we enter into this town,” The Hobo said, “lets discuss how we’re going to be getting from the town to the city. The first thing that we’re going to do is get some newer clothes.

“Why?”

“We need to blend in and we can’t do that with what we’re currently wearing

The bells of change are tolling

But when are they not?

One action

One decision

Can change the fate of many

And yet how can we not gamble?

The bell of change are tolling

But when are they not?

The time has come-

We must be moving on

The board was cleared

But where do we go from here?

The bells of change are tolling

But when are they not?

One action

One decision

Can change the fate of many

And yet how can we not gamble?

Inclining my head in understanding, I got up and found a section of the car that was shielded from the wind. Curling up into a ball, I was asleep in seconds.

A short time later, I felt something shaking my shoulder. Stirring awake, I stretched and yawned. “We’re there already?”

“Just about,” the Hobo replied.  “We’re coming up to the outskirts of Moscow Oblast. We’re going to jump off before we hit the town. Once we do that, we will discuss from there where we’ll go next.”

Standing up, I wobbled over to the side of the car and looked out. The ground whizzed by me at an alarming rate. “You expect me to jump from this?”

The Hobo laughed, “Of course the train is going to slow down before we jump. You see that rising skyscraper in the distance?”

“Yes,”

“That is part of Moscow. That is where we’re headed. Now, in order to get there, we need to jump right when this train shifts tracks before heading into the train station. After the train goes around this bend, you will hear the brakes engage and the train will begin to slow down. Right after that is when the train will switch tracks. Be ready to jump.”

Nodding my head in understanding, I held on to the side of the car as the train went around the bend. A few minutes later, I heard the brakes groan and the train began to slow with a few slight jerks. Looking for the spot that the Hobo had mentioned, I soon began to pick up on the emergence of a new track. Preparing myself to jump, I felt a paw press sharply into my back, before finding myself hurtling out of the train and into the dry patches of grass on the right side of the train.

This last week I was asked by my potential illustrator to send more information concerning the main character in Crow. The whole idea is that I wanted a certain scene of the novel displayed for the front cover.  What I didn’t realize is that when I sent him the scene, I forgot to add a detailed description of the character. Given that this novels’ first draft was written a good 5-8 years ago, it has been sometime since I have taken a good look at Jocren, when he was first introduced. So, I decided to write up a new profile for him. In doing so, I realized that there were a few minor details that I had left out. So now, (Yes. I realize that I’m using ‘so’ quite often, but I’m trying to get this piece written, so cut me some slack please) I need to go back into the text and add these few missing bits. It’s nothing serious. A line here, a line there and possibly a line to a rod, to help the poor fisherman catch a ten-pound bass.

My intentions with this entry are to generate interest in this up coming novel. My hope is that this novel will be released this sometime this year. So, I hope dear readers, that this will whet your appetite.

Sincerely,

Richard Polk

Character Profile

Main character name: Jocren

Height: 6.2 ft- about

Weight: 132

Hair Color: Jet Black

Body Structure: thin frame, tall and lanky. Sharp facial features. A pair of wings tucked neatly behind his back.

Eye color: I assume that he has dark brown- nearly black eyes- will need to check to see if this in the novel- father has dark eyes and black hair

Family:

Father: Dr.  Jocren Rotter- the villain of the story.

Mother: Jillian- A – deceased

Sister: Jill. Named after the mother. Kidnapped by Dr. Rotter to be used as leverage against Jocren

Helga: A Dragtonian spinster who raised Jocren and Jill after the untimely death of their Mother Jillian -A

Race

Jocren and Jill are one of a kind mixed race. Dr. Rotter is Crowdidyian and Jillian- A – their mother is Dragtonian. This makes Jocren and Jill a mixture of both and highly desirable to the Crowdidyians and Dr. Rotter in particular, due to their unique genetic makeup they possess they key to freeing Crow (the Crowdidyians god).

Dress: Nothing is specifically mentioned or at none that I can find. So, I assume that since he’s a thief by trade, that he wears loose fitting shoes and boots. Given more of the bad boy kind of vibe- black pants and shirt that contrast with his white/ pale skin. The shirt will have the company logo on it CIR- Crow Institute of Research- now I need to put this into the novel….

Weapons: Jocren had two blasters on his hips- Dead Mark x13, with silencers

Realizing that the Hobo was right, I did my best to calm my breathing and soon I felt my blood pressure dying down. Sitting on the bed floor, I gazed over at the Hobo who was resting against the bed wall. “So, where exactly is this train going?”

The Hobo opened one eye. “You jumped on a train and you don’t even know where it was headed?”

“The farm that I was living on was seized by the government after the Farmer and his wife decided to take a stand. Having no where to go, I decided that jumping on the nearest train and riding it out was my best option.”

“Oh, so you chose the life of a Hobo, because you felt that you had no other choice?”

“Yes and No,” I replied. “Yes, I had no where to go and yet I was granted a rarely opportunity. With nothing holding me down, I was free to go anywhere and do anything that I pleased.”

“So, with nothing tying you down, you decided to hop a train and see where the wind blew you. What a splendid, foolish idea.”

“Yes, I decided to embrace the life of a wanderer, such as yourself.” I replied.

“Hmm, the life of a wanderer,” the Hobo mused. “I like the sound of that. Well then, my fellow wanderer, this train in headed towards Moscow, though we will be jumping of shortly before it arrives. Till then, may I suggest getting some sleep. You’re going to need it.”

As the train neared our location, everything seemed to slow down. I watched as the hobo moved towards the train and within two hops, he was in the open bed of the train car. Spinning around, he yelled, “Don’t just stand there in a daze, hurry up and grab my paw, before your left behind.”

Urging my legs to move forward, it felt like I was running in quicksand, but in an instant, I was leaping through the air, reaching out for the Hobo’s extended paw. Grasping, I thought that I would slip and fall beneath the wheels of the train and for a moment it seemed that I would. But then, I found myself swinging into the open box car. Landing on my two back paws, I stumbled and landed on my side, my knapsack falling from my hands and skidding across the bed floor and out the other side. Scrabbling to my feet, I ran to the other of side the car and watched hopelessly as my knapsack disappeared from view.

“Well, that’s a shame about your bag,” the Hobo replied. “And I could’ve gone for another sandwich.”

“Is your stomach all you carry about?” I screamed. “All I owned was in that knapsack.”

“Calm down.”

“Calm down, calm down?” I yelled. “How am I supposed to survive?”

“By the skin of your whiskers” the Hobo replied. “That is how cats in my line of work survive, and I’ll show you how. But first you need to calm down and collect your wits about you

This is a rant about absolutely nothing. Absolutely nothing you say- but that is absurd. How do you write about absolutely nothing. Well, that is simple. You start with the words Absolutely nothing, and you go from there.

“Well, you’re not wrong.” George replied…. though I do wonder why this narrator is always naming me George and not frank, dick, Buff or George Blaptine the third

“You do know that you just used George as a name you prefer to be called right now” Buff- who was naturally lifting weights as he voiced his reply. “Besides buff is already taken.”

“Yes, yes, I know about your clown brothers political run for most popular ducky – it was all in – here the narrator interrupts…” I’m sorry guys I seemed to have lost my place- can we start over?

“Doing so, would be such a pain,” Buff replied. “How about a single liner to get you back on track.”

“Okay,” I guess that will have to do…”

“Gentlemen spelled backwards is MenGentle…” Buff replied as he quickly switched from a 50 pound to a 100-pound weight

“Okay, and what does that have to do with what we are talking about?”

“Nothing, absolutely nothing.” Buff replied. “And that is what this rant is supposed to be about.”

“He’s not wrong?” George replied as he watched Buff throw the 100-pound weights and pick up a pricer to car- with a raggedy Ann doll strapped in (don’t worry for this current piece no live toddlers were used-yet). “Though I do wonder why do you always nae me George and not frank, buff Clemente or George Blaptine the third duke of Quishmire.”

“Well first off, George comes to mind because of the old bugs bunny cartoon- I actually had a pet rock named George.”

“Do I look like a pet rock to you?” George the Conquer of Noodles replied in a huff. “But if you do insist on naming me George, then you at least make me the Third Duke of Quishmire?”

“Why would you want to be a Duke when you’re already the Conquer of Noodles?”

“When did I become the Conquer of Noodles?”

“In the previous line,” Buff replied as he threw the pricer car across the nonexistent room. “You guys have really bad attention spans. Now if you excuse me, I have a protein moon drink to consume before I hit the fully clothed beach.”

“Fully clothed beach?”

“Yes, fully clothed beach. Regular beaches were so yesterday and nude beaches were banned because they’re nippy in January. To many people were getting bitten. Now I really must be going. This conversation Is getting a little redundant and I have better things to do. Like penguins writing Haikus.”

“Haikus,” George the slayer of chicken nuggets replied. “I hate Haikus.”

“I concur,” Narrator replied. “They don’t make any sense to me.”

Well, that fine,” Buff replied. “Neither one of you were invited anyway.”
