Early the next morning, Jill found herself awakened by a sudden cold draft in the room. Raising her head from the pillow, she saw the tail end of Mother’s dress as she exited the room. Curious as to what she had been up to, Jill swung her feet out of bed and stood up. Looking around the room, she at first didn’t see anything out of place, but on second examination, Jill noticed that the window was open. This would explain the cold draft, but it wouldn’t explain why Mother would enter the room and open the window in the first place. Walking over to the door, Jill checked the handle. It was still locked. Looking at the chain lock, she noticed that it was still in place. Something was not right. Shaking her head, Jill looked again. No, she was not mistaken, the latch was still in its place. “How did she get in here to open the window,” Jill muttered to herself, “And then how did she get out again, without removing the latch.”
Knowing that she would just give herself a headache by trying to rationalize the improbable. Jill decided to table the problem for now, though when the time came, she would get the answers she needed from Moxie and then she would determine where to go from there. There was one thing however, that Jill was almost certain of, and that was that she needed to get to the bottom of what was going on, while her chances of survival were still in her favor.
