I don’t know what I want to write about. Now to be sure, I could always work on the weekly blog and maybe I could get something churned out in about an hour or so. But to be honest, my heart is not leading me in that direction right now. There is one thing that keeps coming to mind. It is a project that I had thought of years ago, and though I keep putting it off- it keeps popping up in my mind. My main concern is – is it morally and professionally correct. Okay, never mind about it being morally correct. Someone already did this idea, and so it is a load off of my mind.
Anyway, As I said before, I don’t know what I’m going to write about. I think at this point, I’m just going to write and see where it goes. Perhaps this will be a poem, perhaps a short story or a snippet of a future novel. Who knows… perhaps this may even be the weekly blog….?
He didn’t know if this crazy scheme could be pulled off. But he knew that he had to try. Only a few hours ago, he had arranged for his families escape. Now though, it was time for him to hold up his own end of the deal. Do Hyun, clutched the brief case tighter to his chest, feeling his heart beat rapidly. What he was going to do tonight, would set him on a path, he could not come back from, nor did he want too. This was Do Hyun chance for redemption and he knew it. No, he was nearly to the top floor, there was no turning back. The elevator dinged, and Do Hyun, stepped off. Calmy, but stiffly, he walked over to the cubicle the he had spent countless lonely nights in, while his family slept ‘Safely under the protection of the Government and as long as Do Hyun, continued to work for them, then that protection remained. The thing was, the project he had been working on had been finished the previous week and the orders had come down for Do Hyun to launch the computer program in an effort to take down their enemy’s power grid. At first, he refused to release the program, but then he was reminded in no uncertain terms that his continued cooperation would be greatly appreciated. That was when Do Hyun knew he had to get his family out of there…. that believe it or not was the easy part. What he was doing now, was much more complicated. Placing the briefcase on the desk, Do Hyun pulled a small wire out of the right-hand side and plugged it into the computer. It was to late to stop the program/virus from reaching the foreign computer networks, though there was some time before the program was triggered.
But it was not to later to prevent the program to be used ever again. Clicking in the keyboard, Do Hyun brought up the files for every program his company had been working on. Shoving a thumb drive into the port, he clicked the copy option and waited as all of the files were copied onto the thumb drive. When it had finished, Do Hyun pulled the thumb drive out of the computer and slipped it into his left pocket. Having done that, he then turned his attention to the briefcase. Clicking the locks free, Do Hyun opened the lid to reveal a blue screen on the bottom of the lid, while the base was a thick silver. On either side was a keyhole and two switches. Picking up both keys, he placed them in their slots at the same time. Pausing to wipe the sweat from his brow, Do Hyun, wiped his hands on his pants to dry them. Taking hold of both keys, he paused to calm his steady nerves. Taking a deep breath, Do Hyun turned both keys at once. White lettering popped up on the screen, Good Morning, you have chosen to operate this device, which do you prefer to do, self-destruct or an emp.
Realizing that if he simply knocked out the power, there was a chance that the program might survive, Do Hyun flipped both switches, on the random chance that both might work on stopping the program. To his surprise, the device replied, “I see you have chosen both. You have two minutes before detonation. Do you acknowledge that this is what you wanted to do? Y, or N.”
Standing up, Do Hyun hit the Y button and watched as the clock started to count down. Shaking his head, Do Hyun, realized that if he doesn’t stop day dreaming, then he would be going down with this building. Heading for the elevator, Do Hyun, looked at the climbing numbers and opted to take the stairs instead….
To be continued.
This little piece is a rough idea for either a short story or novel. I was thinking about this earlier, that what if someone created a program that blocked (as barriers if you will) other defense programs, thus allowing another program (a virus of sorts) to sneak in there undetected and lay dormant until it is activated. This then so-called program(virus) would wreak havoc on the electric grid of that country it was activated in.
This of course is a future project and will mot likely be picked up on in half a year to a year, for right now, it will sit on my wall – while I decide what I’m going to do with it. Perhaps it will become my new blog project…after I’m done with the one, I’m currently on…. hey who knows.
Anyway, I need to wrap this up and head to bed, 9:00 am comes early, when you’re pushing 4:00 am. So, goodnight and I hope you have enjoyed reading this little piece.
Sincerely,
Richard Polk
